State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will learn a song about the letter D/d and practice finding the /d/ sound in words like dance, dig, dip, and do.

Literacy Activities
Do as I’m Doing

Teach the children the first verse of the song "Do as I’m Doing."
Show the children an uppercase letter D and lowercase letter d; have them write the letters in the air with their fingers while saying the /d/ sound.
Show the children action words that begin with /d/: dig, dance, dip down, dive, drive, drum, drop.
Have the children do actions for the words.
Let children take turns being the leader while singing “Do as I’m Doing” using the /d/ action words, as shown in the text for the song.

Make D words and write D/d

Show the letter D/d; let the children name the letter and say the sound.
List action words without the initial d (e.g., __ig, __ance, __ip, __ive, __rum, __rop); let the children fill in the missing letter.
Have the children write the letter D in the air while singing "Do As I’m Doing."
Let the children take turns acting out the words while others guess the action.
Help the children write D and d while saying the /d/ sound.

Objective
Associate the uppercase letter D and lowercase letter d with the /d/ sound in words such as do, dance, and doing.

Materials

Action word cards
"Do As I'm Doing" song

Activity: Do As I'm Doing

Have your child teach you the "Do As I'm Doing" song (use words provided and support as necessary).
Take turns choosing an action card and leading the song "Do As I'm Doing," acting out the chosen word as you sing the song.
Read the action cards again with your child and have him or her circle the letter D in each word.
Help your child discover things in the room that begin with the letter D.
Write a list of the things your child found and let him or her write the beginning letter D for each word.
Have your child find the letter D and d in the lyrics of the "Do As I'm Doing" song.
The activity can be repeated several times.
