State and Model the Objective
The children will help Ted get fed and get off to bed as they practice saying words that rhyme with fed, such as bed, red, and Ted.  

Literacy Activities
Ted needs to be fed 

• Using masking tape, mark a red line at both ends of the room.
• Label the toy dog or the picture of the dog (see below) as Ted and tell the children that Ted needs to be fed. 
• Divide the children into two teams and tell the teams to sit behind the red lines.
• Place "dog bowl" (basket or bowl) and the dog in-between the teams. 
• Have one child from each team stand and toss a beanbag into the dog bowl at the same time.
  • If the beanbag lands in the dog bowl, have the child say, "I fed Ted!"
• Repeat so everyone has a turn.
• When the game is over, have the children say, "It's time to go to bed, Ted."
• Ask the children what words they heard in the activity that rhyme with fed, such as Ted, red, and bed (support as needed).

Ted needs to go to bed

• Have the children sit in a circle around a desk or chair with a red blanket (or red paper) on it to make a bed.  
• Hold up Ted and whisper to the children that it's time for Ted to go to bed but that he doesn't like to go to bed.
• Ask the children to tell Ted that it's time to go to bed then watch to see if he listens.
  • Have Ted stand on his head (hold him upside-down).
  • Have the children say, "No, Ted, don't stand on your head. It's time for bed!" then watch to see if he listens.
  • Have Ted whine like he is hungry, then ask the children to say, "No, Ted, you're already fed. It's time for bed!"
  • Make Ted howl like he is sad, then hold up the red blanket or red paper and have the children say, "Look, Ted! It's your blanket that's red! It's time for bed."
  • Have Ted lie on the bed and have a child put the blanket over him. Let the children say, "Good night, Ted!"
• Repeat tucking Ted in bed as many times as desired, allowing a different child to put the blanket on Ted each time. 
• Thank the children quietly for helping Ted get to bed.
• Review the rhyming words by writing a checklist on the board of the things Ted did before bed.
• Help the children recognize the rhyming words and let them take turns underlining them with a red marker.
  • Ted stood on his head.
  • Ted was fed.
  • Ted got in bed.
  • Ted got his blanket that's red. 

More Practice
Practice rhyming

• Have the children sit in a circle and remind them of the words they heard that rhyme with fed, such as bed, head, red, and Ted.  
• Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with fed and then give one child a picture of a dog bone (see below).
• Have the child tell you the word they thought of that rhymes with fed (support as needed) as they pass the bone to the next child.
• Allow each child the opportunity to receive the bone, say a rhyming word, and then pass the bone.

Recognize rhyming words

• Have the children repeat a set of two words (e.g. bed, head).
• Ask the children to show you thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
• Repeat with other sets of words (e.g., fed, spread; led, sled; tread, cat; head, said; pled, Ted; dread, truck; wed, fled) and support as needed.
