Overview
The children will feed a greedy gorilla as they practice saying the /g/ sound in words such as giddy, green, and gorilla.

Literacy Activity
Feed the greedy gorilla

• Assemble the gorilla sack puppet.
• Write the uppercase letter G and lowercase letter g on the board and ask the children to name the letter.
• Explain that the letter G makes the /g/ sound.
• Have the children write the letter G in the air with their finger while they produce the /g/ sound.
• Show the children the greedy gorilla puppet and tell them that the gorilla likes to gobble things that begin with the /g/ sound.
• Have the children identify the picture on each picture card.
• Instruct the children to circle the letter G in the word on each card and emphasize that the letter G makes the /g/ sound.
• Allow the children to feed the picture cards to the greedy gorilla puppet.
• As the children place each picture card in the gorilla’s mouth, have them name the picture, emphasizing the /g/ sound (e.g., /g/, /g/, gum). Support as needed.

More Practice
Identify the target sound

• Have the children identify the beginning and ending sounds of words by tapping their head for the beginning sound of the word and toes for the rest of the word.
  • For example: gap = g (tap head) + ap (tap toes)
  • gap = g + ap
  • gum = g + um
  • got = g + ot
  • get = g + et
• Make a list of the words with the children.
• Point out that all of the words have the /g/ sound at the beginning of the word and start with the letter G.

Identify and write the target letter

• Have the children write the uppercase letter G and lowercase letter g on small pieces of paper using a green crayon, colored pencil, or marker.
• Instruct the children to find the letter G in the word green on the crayon.
• Allow the children to feed their letter cards to the greedy gorilla puppet.
• Ask the children to produce the /g/ sound each time they feed a letter G to the gorilla.
