State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will get to pretend to be a pup and jump up as they practice recognizing and producing words that rhyme with pup.
Literacy Activities
Pretend to be a pup who does "up" tricks
- Show the children the picture of a puppy (found below) and explain that sometimes we call a puppy a "pup."
- Tell the children that they get to pretend to be a pup then let them explore barking, walking on all fours, wagging their tail, etc.
- Ask the "pups" to listen for words that rhyme with pup as you teach them tricks.
- Say, "Sit up pup!" and let the children pretend to be a pup who "sits up."
- Continue teaching the children "up" tricks like, "Speak up, pup!" (have the children bark) "Stand up, pup!" and "Jump up, pup!"
- Ask the children what words they heard in the activity that rhyme with pup (e.g., up).
- Repeat the activity if desired, allowing each child to get the "pups" (the other children) to do one of the tricks.
Feed the pup from a cup
- Show the children a small stuffed dog (optional).
- Tell the children that the pup is hungry, and they need to feed the pup from a cup.
- Engage the children in pretending to feed the pup from a cup (e.g., "Pick up the pup food and pour it in the cup for the pup," "Eat up, pup!" "Time to clean up!" "Wash the pup's cup!").
- Ask the children to share the words they heard that rhyme with pup (e.g., up, cup).
Make more words that rhyme with pup
- Review the things the children did as they played with words that rhyme with pup (e.g., "We got to pretend to be a pup, feed the pup from a cup, teach the pup 'up' tricks").
- Remind the children of the words they heard that rhyme with pup (e.g., up, cup).
- Have the children think of or make up other words that rhyme with pup (e.g., yup, sup, gup, hup).
Read a text to the children
- Allow the children to attach a puppy head picture to a straw and poke a hole in the bottom of a cup to lower the straw through to make a puppet.
- Display the Up Pup! target text large enough for the children to easily see.
- Read the text to the children, pointing to each word in left-to-right sequence and showing the teacher's part and the children's part.
- Read the text again and have the children point to each word in left-to-right sequence and say their part, “Up pup! Out of the cup!” with you.
- Read the Up Pup! story to the children again, allowing them to push their pup up and say, "Up pup! Out of the cup!" when they hear the word "pup."
- After completing reading the text, help the children recognize which words rhyme with pup (e.g., up, cup).
- Help the children think of or make up words that rhyme with pup (e.g., gup, hup, yup, bup).
