Literacy Activities
Admire the

  • Write the letter A on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the A in the air with their fingers.
  • Explain that the word admire starts with the letter A and means to think that someone or something is good or great like a person admires an artist’s painting.
  • Give the children an A coloring page and markers or crayons.
  • Tell the children to decorate the A to make it look amazing, and invite them to admire (or say how much they like) each other’s artwork.
  • Model admiring the children’s work by giving compliments such as, “I admire your amazing A artwork!”

Admire an alphabet apple

  • Give the children a picture of an apple and tell them they will turn the apple into an alphabet apple by pasting the letter A on the apple.
  • Give the children the letter cards and have them cut out the letters (supporting as needed) and mix them up.
  • Tell the children to sort through the letter cards and paste the letter A on the apple but not any other letters.
  • When a child finds a letter A have the child say “I found an A!”
    • If a child mistakenly identifies a distractor card as a letter A, have him or her look at the letter A on the whiteboard and compare it to the letter he or she picked.
  • Have the children write the letter A around the apple.
  • Let the children admire each other’s alphabet apple.
