- Ten plastic bottles (with or without water in the bottom to provide weight)
- Small pieces of paper or sticky notes
- Blue, black, or brown markers
- Bowling pin coloring pages
Overview
The children will bowl a ball and try to bump the letter B as they recognize and name the letter B.
Literacy Activities
Bowl down bottles
- Write the letter B on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the B in the air with their fingers.
- Help the children write a B with blue, brown, or black markers on small pieces of paper or sticky notes then attach the papers to the plastic bottles.
- Set up the bottles like bowling pins.
- Have the children take turns “bowling,” using two hands as they straddle the ball to roll it.
- As the ball rolls, have the children repeat the name of the letter B until the ball bumps a bottle.
- When a child’s ball bumps a bottle and knocks it over, have the child say, “I bowled over a B bottle!”
More Practice
Write the target letter
- Give the children a bowling pin coloring page and markers or crayons.
- Support the children as needed in writing the letter B on and around the bowling pin.
- Tell the children to color the bowling pin with crayons or markers to make it beautiful.

- Bowling pin graphic

- Blue, brown, or black crayons or markers
Activity: Bowl the Ball
- Guide your child in writing the letter B on small pieces of paper or sticky notes.
- Attach a B paper to each plastic bottle and set up the bottles like bowling pins.
- Take turns bowling the ball and trying to bump the B on the bottles.
- As the ball rolls, repeat the name of the letter B with your child until the ball bumps a bottle.
- After knocking over a bottle, have your child say, "I bowled over a B bottle!"
- Have your child decorate the bowling pin picture page by writing the letter B in various sizes and with the blue, brown, and black markers or crayons on and around the pin, supporting as needed.
