Materials:

  • 1–2 bags of Doritos® chips
  • Pretend Doritos® chips, printed on orange paper
  • Chip dip or pretend chip dip (e.g., play dough, colored water)
  • Small bowls
  • Plastic bag

Overview
The children will dip and dunk some Doritos® chips as they recognize and name the letter D.
 
Literacy Activities
Dip and dunk Doritos®

  • Write the letter D on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the D in the air with their fingers.
  • Pass out some Doritos® chips and bowls of dip (or paper chips and pretend dip), and point out that Doritos®s and dip both start with the letter D.
  • Have one child at a time be the action leader and choose between three different ways to dip the Doritos®: dip (just the tip), dunk (all the way), or dig (scoop).
  • Remind the children, “Don’t double dip!” if they get too excited, especially if using real chips and dip.
  • The children will follow the action leader, do the chosen action with their Doritos® in the dip, and say the action as they do it (e.g. “Dip the Doritos®!”).

 
More Practice
Write the target letter

  • Give each child a paper Doritos® chip, and have the children write the letter D all over their paper chip by copying the model letter from the board.
  • Put a group of children’s paper Doritos® in a plastic bag labeled with the letter D. Then have the group deliver the Doritos® to a designated desk.
  • Let each group of children dump their Doritos® out on the desk and design a letter D using the chips.

  • Chip dip or pretend chip dip (e.g., play dough, colored water) 
  • Small bowl

Activity: Do a Dip

  • Take turns asking each other, "What do you like to do with your Doritos®?" and answering, "I like to ___(dip, dig, dunk) my Doritos®."
  • Do the action together and then eat (or pretend to eat) the chip.
  • Every time someone does an action with the Doritos®, have your child write the letter D on a paper chip (support as needed).
  • Look around the kitchen together for other letter D objects, (e.g., donut, door) and have your child write a letter D on the chip for each one he or she finds.
