Target Words:

  • exercise
  • end
  • envelope
  • Ed

Materials:

  • Barbell (paper towel or wrapping paper tubes, or rolled up paper)
  • Letters E and e on paper circles (see below)
  • Letter cards (see below)
  • Envelope
  • Exercise Ed graphic (see below)

State and model the objective

Tell the children that they will exercise as they look for the letter E, and recognize and name the uppercase letter E and the lowercase letter e.

Practice the skill within an activity

Exercise with the letter E

  • Before the activity, make a barbell using a paper towel tube (or wrapping paper tube/rolled paper) and taping the paper circles with the letters E and e, one on each end of the tube as weights; place the letter cards (see below) in an envelope on the other side of the room.
  • Write the uppercase letter E and lowercase letter e on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children write the E and e in the air with their fingers.
  • Point out that the words exercise and envelope both start with the letter E.
  • Invite the children to exercise by hopping, jumping, or skipping across the room to get a letter card out of an envelope.
    • If the letter is an E, have the child attach the letter to the end of the barbell with the uppercase E
    • If the letter is an e, attach the letter to the end with the lowercase e.
    • If the letter is not an E, have the child place the card in a discard pile.
  • Let the children lift the barbell up and down while saying, “Exercise with E.”
  • Write the uppercase E and lowercase e on the whiteboard then have the children exercise their arms by writing the letters E and e in the air with their finger.

Apply the skill

Play ABC hide and seek

  • Provide uppercase and lowercase letter cards (see below).
  • Have the children count the cards to determine how many uppercase/lowercase letters they will need to find.
  • Choose two children to hide the cards in a designated area.
  • Set a timer and send two small groups with an assignment to find the uppercase letters or lowercase letters.
  • Let the children exercise by hopping, jumping, or skipping across the room as they search for the letters.
  • As a group, have the children identify the letters they have found.
  • Play another round of the game if time permits.

Write the target letter

  • Distribute the picture of Exercise Ed (see below) and direct the children to circle every uppercase letter E with red, and circle every lowercase letter e with blue.
  • Have the children exercise their hands by writing the uppercase letter E and lowercase letter around the picture of Ed.
