Objective

Recognize and name the letters E and e.

Materials:

  • Paper 
  • Envelope
  • String (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will explore the room to find Es as they recognize and name the letter E.


Literacy Activities
Explore for elegant Es

  • Make pretend binoculars:
    • Roll two half sheets of paper into cylinders
    • Tape the two cylinders together
    • Attach a string (optional)
  • Write and name the uppercase and lowercase letters E and e.
  • Tell the children that E makes the /e/ sound.
  • Have the children write E and e on separate small pieces of paper.
  • Let the children color their Es to make them elegant (optional).
  • Gather the letters and place them face down around the room.
  • Tell the children that they will be excellent explorers as they encounter Es.
  • Using pretend binoculars, have the children explore the room and look for the letters E and e.
  • Allow the children to choose two cards to flip over at a time. 
  • When a child finds an E and an e, have them say, “I found an E match!”


Make an envelope explode

  • Place every E letter in an envelope.
  • Make the Es explode out of the envelope by turning it inside out.
  • Show the children the empty envelope.
  • Have the children put the letters back in the envelope and say, “We put every E in the envelope.”


Find every E

  • Tell the children they will explore and look for more Es.
  • Write several Es with a few other letters. 
  • Let the children use their binoculars to search for Es (optional).
  • Have the children say, “I found an E!” every time they point to an E
