Practice the skill within an activity
Fit the F on the fish!

  • Write the uppercase letter F and lowercase letter f on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children write the F and f in the air with their fingers.
  • Show the children the large fish graphic (see below) and display it on the board.
  • Have a child draw a letter card (see below) out of the bowl.
  • Have the child show the class what the letter card is, and determine as a group whether or not the letter on the card is an uppercase or lowercase f.
  • If the letter on the card is an uppercase F or lowercase f, have the children say, “Fit the F on the fish!” and tape/glue the letter card on the fish.
  • If a child misidentifies a distractor letter as the letter F, have the child compare the letter to the F or f on the whiteboard.
  • If the letter card is not either the uppercase letter F or the lowercase letter f, have the child place it in a discard pile.

Apply the skill

  • Have the children cut out the fins then fit the fins onto the fish while saying, “Fit F on my fish!”
  • Help the children tape or glue the fins onto the fish.

Write the target letter

  • Have the children trace the uppercase letter F and the lowercase letter f written on the fins of the small fish.
  • Have the children write the uppercase letter F and lowercase letter f on the back of the small fish graphic (provide support as needed), or allow the children to decorate the large fish graphic by writing the letter F and f in the empty spaces.
