Literacy Activities
Find the F fins

  • Write and name the letters F and f. Tell the children that F makes the /f/ sound.
  • Display the fish picture (see below) and point out that the fish is missing its fin.
  • Spread out the fins (see below) facedown.
  • Explain that some of the fins have the uppercase or lowercase letter F.
  • Allow the children to take turns picking a fin.
  • Decide together if the fin has an F or f on it.
  • Put the fins with F or f in a pile.

Fit the fins on the fish

  • Add tape to the back of the F fins, blindfold a child, and let them try to fit the fin on the fish.
  • Have the other children chant, “Fit the fin!” loudly when the child is closer to the fish and quietly when the child moves farther away.
  • Once the fin has been placed on the fish, have the child take off the blindfold.
  • Let another child take a turn; repeat until all the F fins are on the fish.
  • Say, “Now the fish have F fins!”

Write the target letter

  • Let the children write F and f on the fish picture.
