Overview
The children will give a gift with the letter G inside as they recognize and name the letter G.

Literacy Activities
Give the gift

  • Tape or write the letter G on the outside of the gift bag and fill the bag with the letter cards.
  • Write the letter G on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the G in the air with their fingers.
  • Have the children sit in a circle. Start the music and say, “Give the gift!”
  • As the music is playing, have the children pass the gift bag around the circle and say “Give the gift” each time the gift bag is passed.
  • When the music stops, say “Get the gift!” and have the children stop passing the bag.
  • Have the child who is holding the bag reach in and choose a letter.
  • Have the child show the class the letter and identify the letter as a group.
    • If the letter is a G, have the children say “G is a good gift!” and put the letter in the middle of the circle.
    • If the letter is not a G, have the children say “_ is not a good gift!” and discard the letter.
  • Repeat until all of the letter card “gifts” have been chosen out of the gift bag.

More Practice
Write the target letter while playing Teacher Says (like Simon Says)

  • Explain that the children will write letters, but only if you say “Teacher says.” Tell the children that if you do not say, “Teacher says,” then they should not write the letter.
  • Hold up a G letter card from the gift bag game and say, “Teacher says ‘Write the letter G.’” Have the children write the letter G in the air or on the floor with their fingers.
  • Hold up a distractor letter card from the gift bag game and say, “Write the letter." If the children begin writing a letter, remind them that you did not say, “Teacher says.”
  • Continue the game, letting the children write the letter G using their finger and surfaces around the room or using a paper and pencil.
