Materials:

  • Letter cards
  • Hippo puppet instructions and graphics
  • Paper lunch sack
  • Ziploc bag

Overview
The children will help a hungry hippo as they recognize and name the uppercase letter H and the lowercase letter h.

Literacy Activities
Feed the hungry hippo 

  • Use the hippo puppet instructions to create a hippo puppet.
  • Write the uppercase letter H and the lowercase letter h on a whiteboard, name the letters and have the children write the H and h in the air with their fingers. 
  • Display the hippo puppet and explain to the children that they will help feed a hungry hippo, but the hippo will only eat the letter H.
  • Mix up the letter cards and have the children take turns choosing a card.
  • Decide as a group whether or not the letter on the card is an H or an h.
    • If the letter is an H, have the children feed the card to the hippo.
    • If the letter is not an H, have the children set the letter card aside.
  • Continue until all of the letter cards have been chosen.

More Practice
Write the target letter

  • Have the children write the letter H and h several times on paper.
  • Help the children cut out the letters and let them feed the letters to the hungry hippo puppet.

Activity: Hungry Hippo

  • Explain to your child that he or she gets to help feed a hungry hippo that only likes to eat the letters H and h.
  • Mix up the letter cards and have your child choose a card. 
  • Decide together whether or not the letter on the card is an uppercase letter H or a lowercase letter h
    • If the letter is an H, have your child pretend to feed the card to the hippo graphic.
    • If the letter is not an H, set the letter card aside.
  • Continue until all of the letter cards have been chosen.
  • Help your child write the letter H and h several times on the hippo (support as needed).
