Overview
The children will play a game with some icky insects as they recognize and name the uppercase letter I and the lowercase letter i.

Literacy Activities
Find the icky letter I

  • Place the insect graphics around the room with a letter card hidden under each insect.
  • Write the uppercase I and lowercase i on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children write the I and i in the air with their fingers.
  • Tell the children that the icky insects are hiding letters and have them look for the insects and Is. Explain that icky means yucky
  • Support the children in naming the hidden letter under each insect.
    • If the letter is an uppercase I or a lowercase i, have the children put the letter and the insect inside a jar or container.
    • If the letter is not an I or i, have the children set the letter and the insect in the discard pile.
    • If a child mistakenly identifies a letter card that is not a letter I, then have him or her look at the letter I on the whiteboard and compare to the letter they found to see if it is the same.
  • Pretend to inspect the icky insects inside the jar or container.

Play Hide and Seek

  • Provide uppercase I and lowercase i letter cards.
  • Have the children count the cards to determine how many uppercase or lowercase letters they will need to find.
  • Choose two children to hide the cards around the classroom.
  • Set a timer and send two small groups to find the uppercase letters or lowercase letters.
  • As a group, have the children identify the letters they have found.
  • Play another round if time permits.

More Practice

Write I on the inchworm

  • Give each of the children a picture of an inchworm.
  • Have the children write the letter I or i on the inchworm to make more icky letters.
  • Let the children put the inchworms in the container with the insects.
  • Have the children say “Icky I!” each time they put an inchworm in the container.

  • Have the children write the letters I and i on small pieces of paper.
  • Let the children hide the letters under insects placed around the room.
