Materials:

  • A large jar
  • Uppercase letter J and lowercase letter j
  • Letter cards
  • J Journey chant

Overview
The children will go on a journey to find the letter J as they recognize and name the uppercase letter J and the lowercase letter j.

Literacy Activities
J Journey

  • Place the letter cards around the room.
  • Write the uppercase letter J and the lowercase letter j on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the J and j in the air with their fingers.
  • Teach the children the J Journey chant and the actions.
  • Have the children look around the room for a J or a j letter card.
  • When a child sees a J or a j letter card, have everyone say the chant and do the actions.
  • Read the chant again, displaying it large enough for the children to see, and invite the children to underline or point to the uppercase letter J and lowercase j in the chant.

Write and identify the target letter

  • Give the children small pieces of paper cut into fourths to create their own letter cards.
  • Have the children write the uppercase letter J and the lowercase letter j on their pieces of paper.
  • Let the children hide the letter cards around the room and repeat the J Journey game (optional).

Activity: J Journey

  • Place the letter cards around the room.
  • Read the J Journey chant to your child and have him or her circle the uppercase letter J and lowercase j in the chant.
  • Have your child look around the room for the letter cards.  
  • When your child finds a letter card, say the J Journey chant together and do the actions.
  • Help your child write the uppercase letter J and lowercase j on several small pieces of paper cut into fourths to create letter cards.
  • Let your child place the new letter cards around the room and repeat the game.
