Materials:

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will jiggle and jive with the letter J as they recognize and name the letters J and j.

Literacy Activities
Jiggle, jive, and find J

  • Write and name the letters J and j.
  • Help the children jot down J and j on small pieces of paper.
  • Have the children jiggle and jive (shake their torsos) as they say /j/.
  • Set out a jar with J and j written on it. 
  • Have the children say, “I jotted down a J! I’ll put my J in the J jar” and jiggle and jive as they put their letter in the jar.

Jot Js on a jewel

  • Allow the children to decorate the jewel (see below) with Js. 
  • Comment:
    • “Just jot Js on the jewel!” 
    • “That's a lot of Js jotted on the jewel!”

Jiggle and Jive song 

  • Teach the children the Jiggle and Jive song (see below) to the tune of “The Hokey Pokey” or another tune. 
  • Have each child choose a J and j from the J jar. 
  • Teach the children that jab means to poke something.
  • Have the children stand in a circle.
  • Put a large J in the center of the circle that the children can pretend to jab. 
  • Sing the Jiggle and Jive song and have the children act it out with their Js.

Find Js  

  • Read the song Jiggle and Jive
  • Help the children point to each J in the text. 
  • Write several Js with other letters mixed in. 
  • Have the children say, “I found a J!” every time they find a J or j.
