State the Objective
Tell the children that they will jog, jump, and jab as they recognize and name the letter J and j.

Literacy Activities
Jog with J

  • Write and name the uppercase letter J and lowercase letter j.
  • Let the children write a J and a j on separate pieces of paper.
  • Teach the children the Jog with J chant (see below) to the tune of “The Hokey Pokey” or another tune.
  • Have the children form a circle while holding an uppercase J in one hand and a lowercase j in the other. 
  • Sing the song with the children while following the directions in the song. 

     

Jot down and jump with Js

  • Let the children jot down the letter J and the letter j (provide support as needed) on small pieces of paper.
  • Read the chant and have the children jot down a J each time they hear the letter J.
  • Read the chant again and have the children jump when they hear the /j/ sound.
  • Have the children make their lowercase js jump on the uppercase Js.
