Overview
Tell the children that they will go on a journey to find the letter J as they recognize and name the letters J and j.

Literacy Activities
J Journey

• Write and name the uppercase and lowercase letters J and j. 
• Tell the children they make the /j/ sound.
• Have the children write the letters J and j on small pieces of paper.
• Tell the children that they need a J to join the journey; collect a J from each child.
• Teach the children the J Journey chant (see below) and actions.
• Have the children walk in place.
• Mix up picture cards (see below) and take turns choosing a card.

• Have the children name each picture, say the chant with that word, and do the actions. 

   

Write and identify the target letter

• Read the chant again and invite the children to find each J and j.
• Write a list of words from the activity (e.g., join, journey, jam, jingle, jar, juice, jeans).
• Have the children point to the J in each word.
