Materials:

  • Necktie graphic 
  • Jumbo paper clips
  • Letter cards
  • Small pieces of paper or sticky notes
  • N stickers or stamps (optional)

Overview
The children will wear a neat necktie as they recognize and name the letter N.

Literacy Activities
Neat necktie

  • Write the letter N on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children say the letter name as they write the N in the air with their fingers.
  • Give the children the necktie graphic and tell them it is a neat necktie. Explain that neat means cool or awesome.
  • Have the children write a large letter N near the bottom of their neat necktie.
  • Mix up the letter cards and have the children choose a card one at a time.
  • Help the children decide if the letter on the card is a letter N.
    • If the letter is an N have the children glue or tape the card on their neat neckties.
    • If the letter is not an N, have the children place it in a discard pile.
  • Allow the children to use N stickers or stamps to cover the necktie with the letter N (optional).

More Practice
Write the target letter

  • Write the letter N on the board and have the children name the letters.
  • Have the children make their own letter cards by writing the letter N on small pieces of paper or sticky notes.
  • Let the children glue or tape their letter cards to their neat necktie.
  • Help the children attach the necktie to their clothing using jumbo paper clips and allow them to wear their neat new necktie.

Activity: Neat Necktie

  • Cut out the letter cards and place them around the room.
  • Have your child search the room for the letter cards.
  • Decide together whether or not each letter is a letter N.
    • If the letter is an N, have your child glue it on the necktie.
    • If the letter is not an N, have your child place it in a discard pile.
  • Have your child write the letter all over the necktie with crayons or markers, providing support as needed.
  • Help your child wear the necktie by attaching it to his or her clothing using jumbo paper clips.
