Materials:

  • Necktie graphic (see below) 
  • Jumbo paperclips
  • Letter cards (see below)
  • Small pieces of paper or sticky notes
  • N stickers or stamps (optional)

State and model the objective

Tell the children that they will wear a neat necktie as they recognize and name the uppercase letter N and the lowercase letter n.

Practice the skill within an activity

Neat necktie

  • Write the uppercase letter N and the lowercase letter n on the whiteboard then have the children name the letter.
  • Give the children the necktie graphic (see below) precut and assembled and tell them it is a neat necktie (explain that neat means cool or awesome).
  • Have the children write a large letter N and n near the bottom of their neat necktie.
  • Mix up the letter cards (see below) and have the children choose a card one at a time.
  • Help the children decide if the letter on the card is the letter N (or lowercase n).
  • If the letter is an N or n have the children glue or tape the card on their neat neckties.
  • If the letter is not an N or n, have the children place it in a discard pile.
  • Allow the children to use N stickers or stamps to cover the necktie with the letter N (optional).

Apply the skill

Write the target letter

  • Write the letter N and n on the board and have the children name the letter.
  • Have the children make their own letter cards by writing the uppercase letter N and lowercase n on small pieces of paper or sticky notes.
  • Let the children glue or tape their letter cards to their neat necktie.
  • Help the children attach the necktie to their clothing using jumbo paperclips and allow them to wear their neat new necktie.

Activity: Neat Necktie

  • Cut out the letter cards (see below) and place them around the room.
  • Have your child search the room for the letter cards.
  • Decide together whether or not each letter is an N (or lowercase n).
    • If the letter is an N or n, have your child glue it on the necktie.
    • If the letter is not an N or n, have your child place it in a discard pile.
  • Have your child write the letter N and n all over the necktie with crayons or markers (provide support as needed).
  • Help your child wear the necktie by attaching it to his or her clothing using jumbo paperclips.
