State the Objective
Tell the children that they will make a neat noodle necklace as they recognize and name the letters N and n.
Literacy Activities
Make a noodle necklace
- Wrap tape around one end of each string to make it easier to thread, and hole-punch the tops of the letter cards (see below).
- Write and name the letters N and n, and tell the children they make the /n/ sound.
- Mix up the letter cards and place them in a pile face down.
- Have the children take turns drawing a letter card. If the letter is an N or n, have the children put the letter by the noodles.
- Tape the untaped end of the string to the table, and let the children string letter cards and noodles on the string.
- As the children string their noodles and letter cards, have them say, “N on the necklace” and “N by the noodles.”
- When the children have finished, help them tie their necklaces around their necks as they say, “My N noodle necklace looks nice!”
Identify the target letter
- Write the letter N next to another letter that the children have previously learned.
- Ask the children which letter is the letter N.
- Repeat this activity several times with a different distractor letter each time.
Write the target letter
- Show the children how to write the letters N and n.
- Let the children write the letters N and n on small pieces of paper.
-
Hole-punch the letters and let the children add them to their noodle necklaces.
