Materials:

  • Letters graphic (see below), 2 copies (at least one on stiff paper)
  • Drum or empty container with a lid
  • Peter’s Ps graphic (see below)

State and model the objective

Tell the children that they will play a game called “Please Pass the Ps!” as they recognize and name the uppercase letter P and the lowercase letter p.

Practice the skill within an activity

Pass the P

  • Attach the letters graphic (with uppercase and lowercase letter Ps on it - see below) to a drum or to a container with a lid.
  • Have the children sit in a circle.
  • Write the uppercase letter P and lowercase letter p on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children write the P and p in the air with their fingers.
  • Give the stiffer letters graphic to one of the children, and explain that they will be playing "Please Pass the Ps," as in the letter P.
  • Drum a basic rhythm on the drum as the children begin passing the letters graphic around the circle and have them chant, “Please pass the Ps” with the rhythm of the drum.
  • When the drum stops, let the child holding the letters graphic become the new drummer.
  • Show the children the letter graphic on the top of the drum and the way you pat the Ps to make the drum beat.
  • Alternate chanting “Please pass the Ps” and “Pat, pat, the Ps” during each round of playing.
  • Repeat the activity until all of the children have had a turn as the drummer.

Apply the skill

Identify the target letter

  • Give each child a Peter’s Ps graphic.
  • Tell the children that Peter needs help finding his Ps because they got mixed in with the other letters.
  • Have the children find and circle each of the ten letter Ps surrounding Peter.

Write the target letter

  • Show the children how to write the uppercase letter P.
  • Give each child a piece of paper and pencil and have the children write the letter P on the paper (provide support as needed).
  • Have the children put all of their letters in one pile when they are finished, pat the pile gently, and say, "Pat the pile of Ps!" as they return to their place.

Objective

Activity: Please Pass the Ps

  • Ask your child if he or she remembers what the uppercase and lowercase letter Ps look like and show your child the letters graphic (with the uppercase and lowercase letter Ps on it - see below).
  • Help your child write a letter P or p on several small pieces of paper, or use the letter graphic.
  • If other members of your family are available, invite them to play the game, "Please Pass the Ps," and explain that you will be passing uppercase and lowercase letter Ps.
  • Sit in a circle with your child holding a stack of the letters he or she wrote (or the letters graphic).
  • As the designated drummer begins drumming a steady rhythm, pass the stack of Ps (or letters graphic) around the circle and chant, "Please pass the Ps" to the rhythm of the drum.
  • When the drum stops, the person holding the Ps gets to be the next drummer.
  • As you play, make up other chants about actions you could do with the P as the drummer drums a steady rhythm (e.g.; Pat, pat the Ps; Pick up the Ps; Pinch the Ps).P letters
