Objective

Recognize and name the uppercase letter P and the lowercase letter p.

Lesson Plan

Target Words:

Materials:

  • Real pants or pants picture*
  • Pocket pictures*
  • Letter cards*
  • Picture cards*

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will put Ps in the pockets as they recognize and name the  letter P.

 

Literacy Activities

Introduce the target letter

  • Write the uppercase letter P and the lowercase letter p.
  • Name the letters and tell the children they make the /p/ sound.
  • Have the children write the uppercase P and lowercase p in the air with their fingers.

     

Paste pockets and Ps

  • Assemble the pants picture (see below), or display a real pair of pants.
  • If making the paper pants, attach attaching piece 1 to pieces 2 and 3 to make the legs of the pants.
  • Have the children put pockets on the pants by taping or pasting the bottom and sides of the paper pockets.
  • When the pants are finished say, "What perfect pants!"
  • Let the children take turns picking a letter card.
  • If they pick a letter P or p, have the children put the P in a pocket or paste the letter P on the pants.

Identify the target letter 

  • Have the children choose a picture card (see below) and identify the picture.
  • Ask them if the word starts with the letter P.
  • If it does, have the children paste the picture on the pants or put the picture in a pocket. 
  • Write the names of the P pictures and have the children underline the P at the beginning of each word.

     

Write the target letter 

  • Show the children how to write the uppercase and lowercase letters P and p on small pieces of paper.
  • Let the children paste them on the pants or put them in pockets.
  • When the children are finished, say, “Those pants look pretty and perfect!”
