State the Objective
Tell the children that they will ask a queen quiet questions as they recognize and name the uppercase and lowercase letters Q and q.
Literacy Activities
Q for the queen
- Write and name the uppercase and lowercase letters Q and q.
- Tell the children that the letter Q makes the /kw/ sound.
- Have the children write Q and q in the air with their fingers while saying “/kw/, /kw/, /kw/: Q!”
- Make the Q crown, and put it on; tell the children that you are a “Q Queen” who likes to answer quiet questions about the letter Q.
- Have the children take turns drawing letter cards (see below) and quietly asking the queen, “Queen, is this a Q?”
- If the letter is an uppercase Q or lowercase letter q, let the child tape it to the queen’s crown.
- Let the children take turns being the “Q Queen.”
Identify the target letter
- Let the children find and circle each Q in the Queen with Qs picture (see below).
- Have the children quickly trace over each letter Q or q that they have circled.
