Literacy Activities
Race to get R

  • Write and name the uppercase and lowercase letters R and r.
  • Have the children write the letters on index cards or pieces of paper while saying the /r/ sound. (Note: model "ruh," with hardly any vowel sound, rather than "er.")
  • Show the children a stretch of floor called the "race track" and stack the letter cards they made at the end of it.
  • Tell the children that they will race to get Rs.
  • Let the children take turns racing to the cards, grabbing a card, and running back to the start.
  • Let the children who are not racing chant "Race to get R!"

Do R actions

  • Lead the children in doing the following actions with their R:
    • Rub the R.
    • Raise the R.
    • Run with the R.

    • Rock back and forth with the R.
  • Make a list of the actions the children did with their Rs (e.g., rub, raise, run, rock) and have the children circle the letter R in the words on the list.

Put R on a robe

  • Help the children attach the R letter cards to the robe or the robe picture (see below) with tape or safety pins.
  • Have the children say the /r/ sound each time they attach an R.
  • Allow the children to wear the R robe or let them hold up the picture of the R robe.
