Materials:
- Index cards or small pieces of paper
- Safety pins (optional)
- Robe or picture of a robe*

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will help find the letter R and put it on a robe as they recognize and name the letter R.
Literacy Activities
Race to get R
- Write and name the uppercase and lowercase letters R and r.
- Have the children write the letters on index cards or pieces of paper while saying the /r/ sound. (Note: model "ruh," with hardly any vowel sound, rather than "er.")
- Show the children a stretch of floor called the "race track" and stack the letter cards they made at the end of it.
- Tell the children that they will race to get Rs.
- Let the children take turns racing to the cards, grabbing a card, and running back to the start.
- Let the children who are not racing chant "Race to get R!"
Do R actions
- Lead the children in doing the following actions with their R:
- Rub the R.
- Raise the R.

Run with the R.
- Rock back and forth with the R.
- Make a list of the actions the children did with their Rs (e.g., rub, raise, run, rock) and have the children circle the letter R in the words on the list.
Put R on a robe
- Help the children attach the R letter cards to the robe or the robe picture (see below) with tape or safety pins.
- Have the children say the /r/ sound each time they attach an R.
- Allow the children to wear the R robe or let them hold up the picture of the R robe.
