 Tell the children that they will find the letter R on rocks around the room as they recognize and name the letter R.

Literacy Activities
Find the letter R on rocks

• Write and name the letters R and r.
• Have the children write R and r in the air with their fingers.
• Let the children write the letter R on rocks with chalk, or use the rock pictures (see below).
• Allow the children to place the R rocks in a ring.

Make shapes with R rocks

• Lead the children in doing the following actions with the R rocks:
  • Line the R rocks up in rows.
  • Make an R ring with the rocks.
  • Make a rainbow shape with the R rocks.
  • Pretend to drop R rocks into a river.
  • Make the shape of an R with the rocks. 

Identify and write the target letter

• Make a list of the words from the activity that start with R (e.g., rocks, rows, round, rainbow, river).
• Have the children find the letter R in the words.
• Help the children write the letter R on small pieces of paper.
• Allow the children to put their R papers on the R rocks.
