  • Large letter R
  • Red crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Music for Ring Around the Rosies (optional)
  • Book: Rosie’s Roses by Pamela Duncan Edwards (Katherine Tegen Books, 2003) (optional)

Overview

The children will play with R roses as they recognize and name the letter R.

Literacy Activities
Red R Roses

  • Write the letter R on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the R in the air with their fingers.
  • Read the book Rosie’s Roses by Pamela Duncan Edwards and have the children find the letter R throughout the book (optional).
  • Have the children sit in a circle and put the large letter R in the middle of the circle.
  • Give each of the children a rose graphic and help them write the letter R on the roses. Then let them color the roses red.
  • Have the children place the red R roses on the letter R in the center of the ring.
  • Teach the children the Ring around the Rosies song.
  • Invite the children to sing the song and walk in a ring around the roses, then fall to the ground when indicated in the song.
  • The song can be repeated multiple times in different R-related ways, such as rapidly, running, really slowly, or in reverse (walking backwards).

More Practice
Identify the target letter

  • Show the children the text for the Ring around the Rosies song, and help them look for the words with an R in them.
  • Have the children take turns circling the letter R in the text of the song.

Write the target letter

  • Help the children write the letter R using a red crayon, marker, or colored pencil.

Activity: Red R Roses

  • Help your child write the letter R on the rose graphics.
  • Let your child color the rose graphics red using a crayon or marker.
  • Cut out the rose graphics and place the red R roses on the floor.
  • Walk with your child in a ring around the roses on the floor then fall to the ground as you sing the Ring Around the Roses song.
  • Have your child circle the letter R as you sit and sing the song again.
