- Music for Ring Around the Rosie (optional)
- Book: Rosie’s Roses by Pamela Duncan Edwards (2003) (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will play with R roses as they recognize and name the letters R and r.
Literacy Activities
Red R Roses
- Write and name the letters R and r.
- Have the children write R and r in the air with their fingers.

Read Rosie’s Roses by Pamela Duncan Edwards and have the children find the letter R throughout the book
(optional).
- Help the children write Rs on the rose picture (see below).
- Let the children color the roses red.
- Have the children sit in a circle around a large letter R (example below).
- Let the children place red R roses on the R in the center of the ring.
- Teach the children the Ring around the Roses song (see below).

Play the Ring around the Rosie music (optional) while the children walk around the roses and fall at the end of
the song.
- Repeat in different R-related ways, such as rapidly, running, really slowly, or in reverse (walking backwards).
Identify the target letter
- Show the children the Ring around the Roses song text.
- Have the children find the letter R in the text.
- Let the children use a red pencil, crayon, or marker to put a red ring around each R or r.
