Target Words:

Materials:

  • Red crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • R rooster pictures*

     

  • Rusty Raccoon Meets Ricky Rabbit by Ann Monsen (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will pretend to rescue roosters as they recognize and name the uppercase and lowercase letters R and r.

Literacy Activities

Introduce the letter R

  • Write and name the uppercase and lowercase letters R and r.
  • Have the children write the letters in the air with their fingers while making the /r/ sound.
  • Read the book Rusty Raccoon Meets Ricky Rabbit and point our the initial letter R throughout the book (optional).

Rescue the roosters

  • Place the rooster cards (see below) on the other side of the room.
  • Have each child strut and flap like a rooster to the R roosters, then bring one R rooster card back.
  • Let the other children chant, "Rescue the R rooster!"
  • Repeat until all of the R roosters have been rescued.


Write the target letter

  • Help the children trace the letter R on each rooster using a red crayon, marker, or colored pencil.
  • Help the children write more uppercase and lowercase Rs around the roosters.
