Materials:

  • Rocks or rock graphics
  • Letter cards
  • Sticky notes or small pieces of paper

Overview

The children will find the letter R on rocks hidden around the room as they recognize and name the letter R.

Literacy Activities
Find the letter R on rocks

  • Write or paint the letter R on rocks or use the rock graphics and hide them around the room.
  • Write the letter R on a whiteboard, name the letter, and have the children write the R in the air with their fingers.
  • Allow the children to gather the R rocks and place them in a ring.

Find the letter R in words

  • Lead the children in doing the following actions with the R rocks:
    • Line the rocks up in rows.
    • Make a ring with the rocks.
    • Make a rainbow shape with the rocks.
    • Pretend to drop rocks into a river.
    • Make the shape of an R with the rocks.
  • Make a list of the words from the activity that start with R (e.g., rocks, rows, round, rainbow, river) and have the children circle the letter R in the words on the list.

More Practice
Identify the target letter

  • Scatter the letter cards around the room.
  • Let the children gather the letter cards.
  • Have the children decide whether or not each letter is a letter R or not, supporting as needed.
    • If the letter is an R, have the children put it near the R rocks.
    • If the letter is not an R, have them place it in a discard pile.

Write the target letter

  • Help the children write the letter R on sticky notes or small pieces of paper.
  • Allow the children to put their R papers on the R rocks.

Activity: R Rocks

  • Find a few rocks or use the rock graphics, then hide the rocks around the room.
  • Allow your child to gather the rocks, then have him or her make the shape of an R using the rocks.
  • Help your child write the letter R on each rock using a marker. 
  • Mix up the letter cards, then take turns choosing a card.
  • Help your child decide whether or not each letter card has an R or not.
    • If the letter is an R, have your child put it near the R rocks.
    • If the letter is not an R, place it in a discard pile.
