State the Objective
Tell the children that they will rip and repair a letter R as they recognize and name the letter R.
Literacy Activities
Rip and repair the letter R
- Write and name the letter R and r, and tell the children it makes the /r/ sound.
- Have the children write R and r in the air with their fingers.
- Make or print an R coloring page (see below) and let the children color it red.
- Help the children write the letters R and r around the big R on the coloring page.
- Let the children rip the R by tearing the coloring page in half.
- Help the children repair the R by taping the paper back together.
- Make comments throughout the activity:
- “Color R red!”
- “Write R!”
- “Rip the R!”

Identify and write R
- Make a list of words used in the activity (e.g., red, rip, repair).
- Have the children point to the R in each word.
- Have the children write R on small pieces of paper.
- Let the children rip and repair their Rs.
