  • Red colored pencils, markers, or crayons
  • R coloring page* (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will rip and repair a letteras they recognize and name the letter R.

Literacy Activities
Rip and repair the letter R

  • Write and name the letter R and r.
  • Have the children write R and r in the air with their fingers.
  • Make or print an R coloring page (see below) and let the children color it red.
  • Help the children write the letter R around the R on the coloring page.
  • Let the children rip the R by tearing the coloring page in half.
  • Help the children repair the R by taping the paper back together.
  • Comment:
    • “Rip the R!”
    • “Repair the R!”
    • “Write R!”
    • “Color R red!”


Identify and write R

  • Make a list of words used in the activity (e.g., red, rip, repair).
  • Have the children point to the R in each word.
  • Have the children write R on small pieces of paper.
  • Allow the children to rip and repair their Rs.
