Materials:

  • Tray or cookie sheet
  • Pretend snow (e.g., sand, rice, confetti, or salt)
  • Cotton balls
  • Large S page or drawing*
  • S snowman picture or drawing*
  • Book: Snowmen All Year by Caralyn and Mark Buehner (Dial Books, 2010) (optional)

State the Objective
Tell the children that they will play in pretend snow as they recognize and name the uppercase letter S and the lowercase letter s.

Literacy Activities
S Snowman

  • Write and name the letters S and s.
  • Have the children write the letters S and s in the air with their fingers.
  • Have the children write an S on small pieces of paper.
  • Read Snowmen All Year by Caralyn and Mark Buehner and have the children look for the letter S in the book (optional).
  • Prepare a tray with pretend snow, then allow the children to trace the letter S in the snow.
  • Show the children the S Snowman picture or drawing (see below) and have them name the letter the snowman is holding.
  • Bury the small S cards in the pretend snow on the tray.
  • Tell the children to search for all of the cards.
  • When they find an S, have the children put it on the snowman while saying,  “Slide the S from the snow to the S snowman!”

Silly snowball 

  • Print the Large S page (see below) or help the children write a large S.
  • Give the children several cotton balls and have them pretend that the cotton balls are snowballs.
  • Let the children make a silly S by gluing the pretend snowballs on the large S

Write and identify the target letter

  • Let each child hold a small S card.
  • Set out the tray of pretend snow and lead the children in doing the various actions with their S:
    • Slip and slide in the snow
    • Skip in the snow
    • Sway in the snow
    • Spin in the snow
  • List words from the activity that begin with S (e.g., snow, slip, slide, skip, sway, spin)
  • Have the children circle the letter S in each word.
  • Allow the children to attach their S paper to the S snowman.
