State the Objective
Tell the children that they will put the letter U under an umbrella as they recognize and name the letter U/u.

Literacy Activities
Write U

• Attach string to the underside of an umbrella or to a picture of an umbrella (see below) and put clothespins or paper clips along the string.
• Write and name the letter U and u.
• Have the children write the U and u in the air with their fingers. 

• Have the children write U and u on small pieces of paper.
  
  Put U letters under an umbrella

   

• Pretend that it’s raining and tell the children to put the Us up under the umbrella to stay dry.
• Help the children attach their Us to the string under the umbrella using the clothespins or paper clips.
• Comment that the letter U is under the umbrella.
• Have the children detach the letters and say, “U” for each letter under the umbrella.
