Overview
The children will put V letter cards on a Velcro V as they recognize and name the uppercase letter V and the lowercase letter v.

Literacy Activities
Velcro V

  • Write the uppercase letter V and the lowercase letter v on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children say the letter name as they write the V and v in the air with their fingers. 
  • Attach one side of Velcro strips to a poster or whiteboard in the shape of a large V.
  • Attach the other side of the Velcro strips to letter cards.
  • Have the children choose one letter card one at a time.
  • Help the children decide whether or not each letter is an uppercase V or a lowercase v.
    • If the letter is a V or a v, put it near the Velcro V.
    • If the letter is not a V or a v, place it in the discard pile.
    • If a child misidentifies a distractor letter as a V or a v, have him or her look at the V and v on the whiteboard and compare them to the letter he or she picked.
  • Have the children attach the V letter cards to the Velcro V.

Write the target letter

  • Give the children the V color page and have the children trace the letter with a violet crayon or marker.
  • Help the children find the letter V in the word violet on the crayon or marker.
  • Let the children write the letter V in the space around the letter on the color page.

Activity: Velcro V

  • Attach one side of the Velcro strips to a piece of paper in the shape of a large letter V. Attach the other side of the Velcro strips to letter cards.
  • Have your child choose one letter card one at a time.
  • Help your child decide whether or not each letter is an uppercase V or a lowercase v.
    • If the letter is a V, put it near the Velcro V.
    • If the letter is not a V, discard it.
  • Let your child attach the V letter cards to the Velcro V.  
  • Allow your child to write the letter V in the space around the Velcro V using a violet crayon or marker.
  • Point out the letter V in the word violet on the crayon or marker. 
  • The activity can be repeated as many times as desired.
