State the Objective
Tell the children that they will pretend to make yummy yogurt as they recognize and name the uppercase letter Y and lowercase letter y.
Literacy Activities
Yummy Y Yogurt

Write the uppercase letter and lowercase letters Y and y on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children say the letter name as they write the Y and y in the air with their fingers.
Have the children sit in a circle with a container labeled "Yummy Y Yogurt" in the center.
- Show the children the labeled empty container.
- Have the children circle the letter Y in each word of the "Yellow Yogurt" sign on the container.
- Teach the children the Yay for Yellow Yogurt song to the tune of "Frere Jacques."
- Have the children write Y and y on small pieces of paper.
- Allow the children to place the letter cards they made into the container while they pass it around and sing the YYay for Yellow Yogurt song.
- Give each child a small bowl of real yellow yogurt to eat (optional) or let the children pretend to eat the yummy Y yogurt they created.
Identify the target letter in a text
- Read the target text Yay for Yellow Yogurt to the children.
- Ask the children to circle the uppercase letter Y and lowercase letter y every time it occurs in the text.
- Read the text slowly, following along with your finger, and have the children write the letter Y in the air each time they see the letter in the text.
Write the target letter
- Help the children write the uppercase letter Y and lowercase letter y on a piece of paper.
- Let the children color their papers yellow.
- Point out the letter Y in the word yellow on the crayon or marker.
- Allow the children to put their Y papers in the Yellow Yogurt container.

Materials
- Yummy Y Yogurt song sung to the tune of "Frere Jacques"
- Yummy Y Yogurt sign
- Small pieces of paper
- Yellow crayon or marker
Activity: Yummy Y Yogurt
- Review the Yummy Y Yogurt song with your child.
- Have your child circle the uppercase letter Y and lowercase letter y every time it occurs in the text for the song.
- Point to the Y on the "Yummy Y Yogurt" sign and ask your child to name the letter.
- Help your child write the uppercase letter Y and lowercase letter y on small pieces of paper.
- Let your child color their papers yellow and point out the letter y in the word yellow on the crayon or marker.
- Have your child place the Y papers in the container while singing the Yummy Y Yogurt song.
- Let your child pretend to eat the Yummy Y yogurt.
- With your child, use household items to create the letter Y (e.g., three sticks formed into a Y shape, three pieces of yarn, three tootsie rolls, three rolled up shirts).
- The activity can be repeated several times.
