- Large Y
- Y prize graphics—one for each child
- Letter cards
- Handwriting practice page
- Beanbag or soft toy
- Yellow crayon or marker
Overview
The children will try to hit a Y as they recognize and name the uppercase letter Y and the lowercase letter y.
Literacy Activities
Yell, “Yippee for Y!”
- Write the uppercase letter Y and the lowercase letter y on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children say the letter name as they write the Y and y in the air with their fingers.
- Tape the large Y to the wall at the children’s eye level.
- Have the children stand away from the wall and let them try to hit the large Y on the wall by throwing a beanbag or a soft toy.
- Tell the children to yell, “Yippee for Y!” when they hit the Y with the beanbag.
- Give the children the Y prize graphic for playing the Y game.
- Ask the children to name the letter on the prize.
- Let the children color their prize yellow and then point out the letter Y in the word yellow on the crayon or marker.
More Practice
Identify the target letter
- Scatter the letter cards around the room, then let the children gather the letter cards.
- Help the children decide whether or not each letter is an uppercase letter Y or a lowercase letter y.
- If the letter is a Y or a y, have the children put it near the large Y.
- If the letter is not a Y or a y, place it in the discard pile.
Write the target letter
- Give the children the handwriting practice page.
- Let the children trace the letters then have them write the uppercase letter Y and lowercase letter y on their own using the lines as a guide.

Activity: Yippee for Yellow
- Help your child write a large letter Y on a sheet of paper, then attach the paper to a wall.
- Let your child try to hit the Y paper by throwing a beanbag or a soft toy at the Y paper on the wall.
- Tell your child to yell, "Yippee for Y!" when he or she hits the Y with the beanbag.
- Give your child the prize graphic for playing the game and ask him or her to name the letter on the prize.
- Let your child color the prize yellow, then point out the letter y in the word yellow on the crayon or marker.
- Mix up the letter cards, then let your children choose a card one at a time.
- Help your child decide whether or not each letter is an uppercase Y or a lowercase y.
- If the letter is a Y or a y, have your child put it near the large Y.
- If the letter is not a Y or a y, discard it.
- Attach the Y letter cards to the wall by the large letter Y, then allow your child to repeat the beanbag toss game.
- The activity can be repeated several times.
