Objective

Name and identify the uppercase letter Z and the lowercase letter z.

Materials:

  • Zebra Picture Cards (see below)
  • Letter cards (see below)
  • Small pieces of paper

State and model the objective

Tell the children that they will pretend to be zebras and zoom around the room as they practice identifying and writing the uppercase letter Z and the lowercase letter z.

Practice the skill within an activity

Zoom to find Z

  • Write the letter Z on the board then have the children name the letter.
  • Scatter the letter cards (see below) around the room.
  • Give the children the zebra graphics and have them circle the letter Z in the word zebra.
  • Let the children pretend to be zebras as they zip, zoom, and zig-zag around the room collecting the letter cards.
  • Help the children decide whether or not each letter is a Z.
  • If the letter is a Z, have the children put it near Z on the board. If the letter is not a Z, discard it.

Apply the skill

  • Identify the target letter
  • Make a list of the words from the activity that begin with the letter z (i.e., zip, zoom, zig, zag)
  • Have the children circle the letter Z in the words on the list.

Write the target letter

  • Help the children write the letter Z on small pieces of paper.
  • Scatter the Z papers around the room and allow the children to zoom around the room to gather the letter Z.

  • Write the letter Z then have your child name the letter.
  • Scatter the letter cards (see below) around the room. 
  • Give your child the zebra graphic (see below) and have him/her circle the letter Z in the word zebra.
  • Let your child pretend to be zebras as he/she zooms around the room collecting the letter cards.
  • Help your child decide whether or not each letter is a Z. If the letter is a Z, keep it. If the letter is not a Z, discard it.
  • Have your child write the letter Z on small pieces of paper then repeat the activity using his/her letter cards.
  • The activity can be repeated several times.
