  • Letter cards
  • Small pieces of paper

Overview
The children will pretend to be zebras and zoom around the room as they recognize and name the uppercase letter Z and the lowercase letter z.

Literacy Activities
Zoom to find Z

  • Write the uppercase letter Z and the lowercase letter z on a whiteboard, name the letters, and have the children say the letter name as they write the Z and z in the air with their fingers.
  • Scatter the letter cards around the room.
  • Give the children the zebra graphics and have them circle the letter Z in the word zebra.
  • Let the children pretend to be zebras as they zip, zoom, and zigzag around the room collecting the letter cards.
  • Help the children decide whether or not each letter is a uppercase letter Z or a lowercase letter z.
    • If the letter is a Z or a z, have the children put it near Z on the board.
    • If the letter is not a Z or a z, place it in the discard pile.

More Practice
Identify the target letter

  • Make a list of the words from the activity that begin with the letter Z (e.g., zip, zoom, zig, zag)
  • Have the children circle the letter Z in the words on the list.

Write the target letter

  • Help the children write the letter Z on small pieces of paper.
  • Scatter the Z papers around the room and allow the children to zoom around the room to gather the letter Z.

Activity: Zoom to Find Z

  • Write the letter Z on a piece of paper, then have your child name the letter.
  • Scatter the letter cards around the room. 
  • Give your child the zebra graphic and have him or her circle the letter Z in the word zebra.
  • Let your child pretend to be a zebra as he or she zooms around the room collecting the letter cards.
  • Help your child decide whether or not each letter is an uppercase letter Z or a lowercase letter z.
    • If the letter is a Z, keep it.
    • If the letter is not a Z, discard it.
  • Have your child write the letter Z on small pieces of paper, then repeat the activity using his or her letter cards.
  • The activity can be repeated several times.
