Have Jake make a cake

  • Choose a child to be Jake and wear the nametag (see below).
  • Using the chart below, tell the story and have the children perform the actions.
  • When Jake pretends to make the cake, give him the mixing spoon and bowl.

Say: Do:
Here is Jake. He is sleeping.  Have Jake pretend to be asleep.
We must wake Jake. Wake up, Jake, wake up.  Have the children wake up Jake.
Jake is awake! Now Jake can make us cake. We want a cake to take to the lake. Jake, make a cake to take to the lake Have the children beg Jake to make a cake: "Make a cake, Jake!"
Jake will make a cake. Jake will bake a cake to take to the lake.  While Jake pretends to make a cake, let the children cheer, “Bake a cake, Jake!”
Jake did make a cake! It is a great cake. Jake baked a cake for us to take to the lake.  Show the cake or picture of the cake.
We will take Jake's cake to the lake. Yum! Jake can bake a great cake.

Recognize rhyming words

  • State two words that rhyme (e.g., cake, make).
  • Ask the children to show thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
  • Repeat with other sets of words that rhyme and don’t rhyme (e.g., Jake, bake; fake, lake; rake, take; sake, wake; flake, make).
