Objective

Recognize words that rhyme with fall (e.g., “Do fall and ball rhyme?”) and produce rhyme words (e.g., “Think of a word that rhymes with fall.”). 

 

Lesson Plan

Overview

The children will play in pretend leaves as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with fall, such as, call, ball, and haul

Literacy Activities

Fall leaves

  • Remind the children that in the fall leaves turn colors and fall off trees. 
  • Go outside to play in real leaves, or pretend to play in the leaves indoors:
    • Fall in the leaves 
    • Call a friend to fall in the leaves
    • Crawl in the leaves
    • Call a friend to haul away some leaves.
    • Roll a ball into the leaves
    • Call a friend to roll a ball into the leaves

It’s Fall

  • Read the It’s Fall target text to the children.
  • Give each child a real or pretend leaf.
  • Read the text again, emphasizing the -all words, and have the children drop a leaf when they hear a word that rhymes with fall (support as needed).

Identify rhyming target words 

  • Display the tree picture.
  • Say pairs of words (e.g., fall-ballwall-tallcall-allball-bird), and ask the children if the words rhyme.
    • If the words rhyme, have a child place a leaf on the tree.
    • If the words do not rhyme, have a child make the leaf fall to the floor.  

Produce rhyming words

  • Give each child a real or pretend leaf, invite them to think of a word that rhymes with fall, (support as needed), and let their leaf fall.
  • Repeat with a ball, letting the ball fall when the children say a word that rhymes with fall.
