My Cape with Shapes

- Newspaper or disposable plastic tablecloth

State the Objective
Tell the children they will make a cape with shapes as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with cape, such as shape, tape, and drape.
Literacy Activities
Make a cape and tape on shapes
- Cut a piece of newspaper or disposable tablecloth into a large rectangle and tell the children it can be a cape.
- Let them tape shapes on the cape.
- Ask the children what they have, and have them answer, “A cape with shapes!”

After pointing out that cape and shape rhyme, ask the children if these words also rhyme with other -ape words (e.g., tape, escape, drape, grape, scrape).
Drape the cape
- Tell the children that they can drape the cape around their neck with tape.
- Have them take turns wearing the cape.
- Comment on words that rhyme with cape (e.g., “Tape rhymes with cape!”)
Read My Cape
- Read the My Cape target text to the children.
- Ask each child to say words that rhyme with cape (support as needed).
