start the art cart
Start the Art Cart
Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with art (e.g., "Do art and cart rhyme?") and produce rhyme words (e.g., "Think of a word that rhymes with art.").
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- art
- cart
- part
- dart
- heart
- apart
Materials:
- Repurposed materials (e.g., yarn, string, cloth, styrofoam, paper shapes)
- Box or small chair to use for a “cart”
- Paper wheels
- Paper steering wheel, handle, or yarn
- Art supplies
State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will make art from things in a pretend cart as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with art, such as cart, mart, start, part, and heart.
Literacy Activities
Get the art cart ready to start
- Tell the children that they will make a cart to deliver art supplies.
- Ask for help taping the parts on the cart (e.g., the wheels, the steering wheel or yarn to pull the cart).
- Have the children put art supplies in the cart.
- Pretend to start the art cart.
- Help the children make the cart dart around to bring them parts to use to make art.
- Let the children make art with the art supplies—perhaps a picture of the art cart.
Recognize rhyming words
- Invite the children to line up.
- Ask the children if two words rhyme (e.g., ‘art and cart’).
- If the words rhyme, say "Art and cart rhyme" and let the children jump one step forward.
- If the words don't rhyme (e.g., art, sing), have the children stay still and say, "Art and sing don't rhyme."
- Repeat with other word pairs (e.g., start, part; cart, dog; dart, tart; mart, horse; apart, heart).
Rhyme with art
- Remind the children of the words that rhyme with art (e.g., part, cart, dart, heart, tart, start, mart).
- Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with art (support as needed).
