State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will hear a story about a girl named Kate who was almost late as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with late, such as fate, grate, bait, and date.

- Tell the Late Kate story using the Kate and skate graphics (found below), plate, and crate.

- Help the children think of words they heard that rhyme with late, such as crate, skate, date, and plate.
More Practice
Produce words that rhyme with late
- Have the children sit in a circle and give one child a paper plate.
- Remind the children of the words in the activity (late, crate, skate, plate).
- Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with late (support as needed) as they pass the plate around the circle.
Recognize rhyming words
- Have the children repeat a set of two words (e.g., late, skate).
- Ask the children to show thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme (support as needed).
- Repeat with other sets of words (e.g., date, crate; gate, Kate; mate, duck; bait, wait; plate, trait; late, truck; skate, hate).
