State and Model the Objective
The children will spread red jam on a piece of bread and practice saying words that rhyme with bread, such as fed, head, and led.

Spread jam on bread
- Ask the children to listen for words that rhyme with bread while you talk about spreading red jam on bread as suggested below:

More Practice
Recognize rhyming words
- Say a pair of words with at least one word that rhymes with bread (e.g., bread, spread; head, fed) and have the children repeat them.
- Ask the children to show you thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme, such as in the pair bed, jump (support as needed).
- Repeat with more sets of words.
Make a rhyming word sandwich
- Tell the children that they will practice saying words that rhyme with bread by pretending they are making a sandwich.
- For the word bread, use the following steps:
- Segment sounds: say /br/ (hold out left hand), then say /ed/ (hold out right hand).
- Blend sounds: say bread (clap hands together as it putting together two slices of bread).
- Repeat with other words that rhyme with bread (e.g., red, bed, said, led, fed)

Materials
- Bread
- Red jam or other spread
- Red crayon or marker
Activity: Bread Spread
- Take turns with your child spreading jam (or other spread) on slices of bread.
- As you spread the jam, chant, "Spread, spread, spread on the bread."
- When you finish, eat the bread.
- Have your child draw a piece of bread and color it red.
- Help your child think of words that rhyme with bread (e.g., spread, red, head, bed) for you to write on their bread drawing.
- Point to and read a word to your child and have him or her point to the word and repeat it back to you.
