State the Objective:
Tell the children that they will clean a bean and generate words that rhyme with green, such as queen, lean, and seen.
Literacy Activities:
Clean the Bean
-
Put pieces of play dough on the picture of a bean, or put the bean in a page protector and color green spots on it with the marker.
-
Use the strips of paper to attach the crown to your head.
-
Introduce yourself to the children as the Queen of Clean and show them the bean.
-
Tell the children that you are hungry and want to eat the bean, but it is not clean.
-
Invite the children to clean a spot of green off the bean individually.
-
Make comments such as the following:
-
The queen of clean does not like green on the bean.
-
Have you ever seen green on a bean?
-
Make the lean bean clean!
-
-
After each spot is removed, ask the children if the bean is clean.
-
Repeat until there are no green spots left on the bean.
Finding Rhyming Words

Ask the children students if they can think of any other words that rhyme with queen.
-
If needed, ask guiding questions (e.g., does seen rhyme with bean?)
-
Make a list of words that rhyme with -een on the whiteboard or chart paper (e.g., seen, Halloween, between, mean).
-
Make up silly sentences with -een words from the activity and from the list (e.g., The mean bean wore green on Halloween”).

Literacy Activities:
Clean the Bean

Put pieces of green play dough on the bean, or put the bean in a page protector and color green spots on it with the marker.
-
Have your child put on the crown and pretend to be the Queen of Clean.
-
Your child’s duty as the Queen of Clean is to clean the green off the bean so it can be eaten.
-
Take turns removing one green spot from the bean. As you take the spots off, say together, “Clean, clean, clean the bean.”
-
After each person takes off a green spot, say together, “We got some green, but the bean isn’t clean.”
-
When the last green spot gets taken off the bean, say together, “No more green! The bean is clean!”
Finding Rhyming Words:
-
Make a list of the words that rhyme with –een from the activity. Support where needed.
-
Think of more words that rhyme with –een (e.g., seen, Halloween, between, mean) together and add them to your list.
-
Write silly sentences with the words on the list together (e.g., The mean bean wore green on Halloween”).
