State the Objective

  • Tell the children that they will generate words that rhyme with clean as they take the green off of the bean that is for the queen
  • Show the picture of the queen and say, “This is the queen of clean. She is hungry, and wants to eat a bean. But her bean is not clean. It is covered with spots that are green! We are going to clean the green off of her bean. While we do, listen for other words that sound like bean.”

Literacy Activities
The queen has green on her bean

Place the picture of the bean inside of the sheet protector. Draw one spot of green on the bean for each child.

  • Show the children the picture of the bean with green spots on it.
  • Have the children erase the green spots from the bean one at a time by saying, “___ (name of the child), it is your turn to clean the green off the bean.”
  • When a child erases a green spot from the bean, ask the children, “Is the bean clean?” If there are still green spots on the bean, have the children respond, “No, there is green on the bean.”
  • Consider saying the following phrases with the children:
    • The queen of clean does not like green on the bean.
    • Have you ever seen green on a bean?
    • Make the bean clean!
  • Repeat until there are no green spots. When the last green spot is erased from the bean, have the children respond, “Yes! The bean is clean!”

    Does it rhyme?

  • Ask the children if certain words rhyme with queen. Say, “Does mean rhyme with queen?” Repeat with more words (e.g., seen, Halloween, between, mean).
