Tip and Drip
Objective
Recognize and produce words that end in ip, blend and segment -ip words, and change the sounds in -ip words to make new words.
Lesson Plan
Target Words:

Materials:
- Paint (thinned slightly so it will drip)
- Bowls or cups
- Strips of paper or cloth
- Paper clips or binder clips
State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will paint with a clip and that they will play with words that rhyme with tip, such as dip, clip, drip, flip, slip and strip.
Literacy Activities
Dip and drip to paint a picture
- Clip a strip of paper or cloth to a paper clip.
- Drip paint into bowls and say, “I tip to drip.”
- Have the children chant, “Tip, drip, tip, drip.”
- Let the children follow -ip actions:
- Grip the clip—tightly hold the paper clip
- Grip the strip—tightly hold the strip of paper or cloth
- Dip the clip—dip the clip into the paint while holding the strip
- Let the clip drip—let paint drip off the clip and onto the paper
- Let the clip slip and flip—let the clip slip and flip to make designs
Drip paint from strips of paper or cloth
- Paint by gripping the clip and using strips of paper or cloth.
- Create a chart with two columns—labeled Clips and Strips.
- Ask the children what they liked better, painting with clips or strips.
- Have the children put a check mark in the Clips or Strips column, depending on which they preferred.
Produce and recognize -ip rhyming words
- List -ip words and point out the -ip endings.
- Ask the children if two words rhyme.
- If the words rhyme (e.g., tip and dip), nod and say, "Tip and dip rhyme.” If the words don’t rhyme (e.g., tip and drum), say, “Tip and drum don’t rhyme!”
- Remind the children of words that rhyme with tip (e.g., dip, drip, clip).
- Ask the children to think of a word that rhymes with tip (support as needed).
Blend and segment rhyme words
- Segment familiar rhyme words into initial consonant + ending (e.g., t + ip) and ask, “What did I say?” (support as needed).
- Segment words into phonemes (e.g., d + i + p) and ask, “What word did I say?”
- Write a word (e.g., dip) and ask:
- What sounds do we hear? (e.g., d + i + p)
- What is the first sound? (e.g., /d/)
- What is the last (or ending) sound? (e.g., /p/)
- What is the middle sound (or the vowel)? (e.g., /i/)

Materials
- Paint (thinned slightly so it will drip)
Activity: Drip Paint From Your Fingertips
- Let your child dip his or her fingertips in the paint to make a picture.
- Point out words that end in -ip (e.g., tip, clip, grip, flip, slip) as your child paints.
- Make comments and/or give instructions that use -ip words.
- Dip your fingertip and let it drip!
- Can you dip the tip of your finger?
- Watch your fingertip drip!
- I can dip the tip of my finger and let it drip.
