My Sock Can Talk

Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with sock (e.g., “Do sock and rock rhyme?”) and produce rhyme words (e.g., “Think of a word that rhymes with sock.”)

- Sock puppet
- Supplies to make sock puppets: old socks, washable markers
- Chalk
- Small rocks or picture of a rock*
- Clock or picture of a clock*
- Blocks or picture of a block*

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children they will make a sock puppet talk and will hear and think of words that rhyme with sock, such as talk, walk, knock, and clock.
Literacy Activities
Throughout these activities, emphasize rhyming words and give the children opportunities to recognize rhymes and produce words that rhyme.
Give commands to the sock puppet
- Have the sock puppet follow commands that you or a child give it.
- Sock, talk!
- Sock, knock on the block.
- Sock, knock on the rock.
- Sock, knock on a clock.
- Sock, walk!
- Sock, walk on the block!
- Sock, draw with chalk.
Let the children make their own sock puppets.
- Have the children add eyes to their sock puppets using the markers.
- Let the children make their socks talk, walk, draw with chalk, and knock on blocks and rocks.
Play a guessing game with rhyming words.
- Hold up a sock with a clock, rock, block, or chalk inside and have the children guess what is inside.
- Have the children hide an item that rhymes with sock (e.g., chalk, block, rock, clock) in their sock puppets and ask a friend to guess which item they hid.
Draw with chalk
- Give the children chalk and let them draw a sock, clock, rock, and block on a pretend or real sidewalk.
Walk in socks
- Let the children walk in their socks and step on -ock pictures (rock, clock, block, sock).
