  • Sidewalk chalk—1 piece for each child
  • A sidewalk or large outdoor paved area to draw pictures on with chalk
  • Rhyme identification cards (see below) 

State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will draw with chalk, go for a walk, and hear and say words that rhyme with chalksuch as rock, walk, clock, lock, sock,  and sidewalk. 

Practice the skill within an activity

Chalk walk 

  • If you don't have a sidewalk available, before the activity, draw a sidewalk-like path on your paved outdoor area, marking the sidewalk dividing lines so each child will have a space on the "sidewalk" to draw in.
  • Give each child a piece of chalk, and have them find a space on the."sidewalk" to draw in.
  • Tell the children to listen for you to say words that rhyme with chalk.
    • If the word rhymes with chalk, the children should raise their chalk in the air then join in saying, "Chalk the ___ (name of rhyming word) on the sidewalk," then draw the object that rhymes with chalk on the sidewalk.
    • If the word does not rhyme with chalk then the children keep their chalk in their lap and listen for the next word.
  • After the children have drawn several objects that rhyme with chalk,  go on a "chalk walk" to see and practice saying the words that rhyme with chalk that they drew on the sidewalk.
  • Ask the children to take turns saying a word they heard in the activity that rhymes with chalk. 

Apply the skill

Practice rhyming 

  • Produce words that rhyme with chalk 
    • Remind the children of the words they played with (walk, chalk, sidewalk, clock, lock, sock, rock). 
    • Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with chalk (talk, mock, dock). 
    • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with chalk. 
    • If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option: 
      • "How about walk? Does walk rhyme with chalk?" (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme) 
      • "Do rock and chalk rhyme?" (Nod your head yes) 
  • Recognize words that do and do not rhyme using pictures (see graphics below) 
    • Lay out two pictures of words that end in -alk or -ock (e.g., chalk, rock) and one picture that does not end in -alk or -ock (e.g., dog). 
    • State all possible word pairs and let the children help you identify the picture that does not rhyme. Remove the picture that does not rhyme with -alk or -ock. 
    • Repeat with other sets of pictures: 
      • Rock, clock, cheese 
      • Lock, sock, girl 
      • Chalk, sidewalk, bird 
      • Clock, sock, cat

Activity: Sidewalk Chalk

  • With your child, take some time to think of objects that rhyme with chalk (e.g., rock, sock, lock, sidewalk).
  • Tell your child that you will say a word and he or she needs to tell you whether or not it rhymes with chalk, and
    • If the word rhymes with chalk, then invite your child to draw the object on the sidewalk as you say together, "____ rhymes with chalk, so you can draw it on the sidewalk."
    • If the word doesn't rhyme with chalk, then have your child pretend to freeze in place until they hear the next rhyming word.
  • Have fun reversing roles and playing the game as many times as desired.
