blocks in the box
Blocks in the Box
Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with -ox (e.g., "Do box and ox rhyme?") and produce rhyme words (e.g., "Think of a word that rhymes with box.").
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- box
- rocks
- locks
- blocks
- socks
- fox
- clocks
Materials:
- -Ox blocks —1 for each child (see below)
- 2 boxes with “–ox Box” written on them
- Chart paper
State and model the objective
Tell the children that they will play a game to see which team can get the most –ox things into the –ox box and hear and say words that rhyme with box (such as rocks, locks, blocks, socks, fox, and clocks).
Practice the skill within an activity
-Ox Blocks
- Have the children sit down by the whiteboard, and ask them to think of words that rhyme with box (i.e., fox, locks, socks, rocks, blocks, clocks).
- Make a list of these words on the whiteboard as the children say them (support as needed).
- Divide the children into two teams, and have each team stand in a single file line behind the two -ox boxes.
- Show the children the -ox blocks (see below) and help the children identify the pictures.
- Set the -ox blocks next to the first person in each line (be sure there is 1 block per child).
- Have each child throw an -ox block into the –ox box until he or she makes it, while chanting with their team the picture on the -ox block that they are trying to get into the –ox box (e.g.; “Fox in the –ox box!").
- Explain that when each player has succeeded in getting one item into the -ox box, they must go to the end of the line to chant with the other members of their team.
- Finish the game when the first team has successfully thrown all of the –ox blocks into the –ox box.
- Play as many times as desired.
Apply the skill
Practice rhyming
- Produce words that rhyme with box
- Remind the children of the words they played with (fox, blocks, rocks, locks, socks, clocks).
- Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with fox (docks, mocks, talks).
- Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with box.
- If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:
- "How about rocks? Does rocks rhyme with box?" (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme).
- "Do fox and locks rhyme?" (Nod your head yes)
- Recognize rhyming words
- Have the children repeat a set of 2 words (e.g., locks, socks).
- Ask the children to put their thumbs up if the words rhyme and their thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
- Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., fox, duck; ox, box; clocks, locks; rocks, toy; docks, play).
- If children do not respond correctly, repeat the 2 words, emphasizing the ending sounds of the words.
Practice blending and segmenting sounds in words
- Tap out sounds in words
- Have children blend individual sounds into words by tapping their head (beginning), and toes (end) then clap to say the whole word (e.g. /f/ tap head, /ox/ tap toes = fox clap hands)
- /l/ /ocks/ = locks
- /s/ /ocks/ = socks
- /b/ /ox/ = box
- /r/ /ocks/ = rocks
- /cl/ /ocks/ = clocks
- Have children blend individual sounds into words by tapping their head (beginning), and toes (end) then clap to say the whole word (e.g. /f/ tap head, /ox/ tap toes = fox clap hands)
SEEL At Home
Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with -ox (e.g., "Do box and ox rhyme?") and produce rhyme words (e.g., "Think of a word that rhymes with box.").
Materials
- Picture cards (see below)
- An empty box, labeled "-ox box"
- Timer
Activity: –Ox Box
- With your child, look through and identify the things that rhyme with box shown on the picture cards.
- Set a timer for 20-25 seconds, then have your child say what is shown on the picture card, crumple it up and trying to throw it into the box.
- When the timer goes off, count how many of the picture cards made it into the box, and smooth the cards out flat.
- Have fun together as you count the number of -ox things pictured on each card and say, “One fox in the –ox box, three clocks in the –ox box, etc.”.
- Repeat the activity as many times as desired, taking turns seeing how many cards you can get into the box.
