Lesson Plan

Target Words:

  • fun
  • sun
  • done
  • one

Materials:

  • Sun graphic
  • Wax paper -1 piece for each child
  • Yellow, orange, and red finger paint (washable)

State and Model the objective
Tell the children that they are going to paint a sun today and hear and say words that rhyme with sun (such as fun, done, one, run and bun).

Practice the skill within the activity

Make a fun sun

  • Give each child a large piece of wax paper.
  • Put a spoonful or a squirt of yellow, orange, and/or red paint on each child's paper.
  • Show the children the sun graphic and have each child finger paint a sun on their wax paper.
  • Throughout the activity, help the children think of words that rhyme with sun, such as fun, bun, run, and one.

Fun with the Sun

  • Have the children stand in a large circle.
  • Have one child stand in the center of the circle with the sun graphic and ask him or her to tell you a word that rhymes with sun.
  • When the child in the center gets a "thumbs up" from you that the word is a rhyme, he or she raises the sun graphic in the air and shouts out the word.
  • Lead the other children in shouting, "Run, run, run, (insert child's word) rhymes with sun!" as they run around the circle.
  • When the child in the center lowers the sun graphic, have the children shout, "Done!" and stop running.
  • Allow each child to have a turn to say a word that rhymes with sun and hold up the sun graphic.

Apply the skill

Practice rhyming

  • Produce words that rhyme with sun
    • Remind the children of the words they played with (fun, sun, done, one, ton).
    • Tell them you can think of other words that rhyme with sun (bun, fun, run).
    • Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with run
    • If a child doesn't respond in a few seconds, give him/her an option:
      • "How about run? Does run rhyme with sun?" (Nod your head yes to let the child know that they rhyme)
      • "Do one and run rhyme?" (Nod your head yes)
  • Recognize rhyming words
    • Have the children repeat a set of 2 words (e.g. fun, one)
    • Ask the children to put their thumbs up if the words rhyme and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
    • Repeat with other sets of words: (e.g., one, done, ton, run; fun, four, bun, bear).
    • If children do not respond correctly, repeat the 2 words, emphasizing the ending sounds of the words.
