Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with crunch (e.g., “Do crunch and munch rhyme?”) and produce rhyme words (e.g., “Think of a word that rhymes with crunch.”).

State and Model the Objective
Tell the children that they will crunch and munch and listen for words that rhyme with crunch, such as bunch and lunch.
Literacy Activities
Crunch and munch
- Give each child a food item or food picture (found below).
- Invite the children to do actions that rhyme with crunch with their food items or cards:
- Munch: pretend to munch
- Crunch: pretend to crunch
- Bunch: pretend to bunch together carrots or grapes
- Involve the children in a crunch cheer (e.g., “We like to crunch and munch! Crunch and munch lunch! Crunch and munch a bunch! Crunch and munch our lunch!”).
Produce words that rhyme with crunch
- Ask the children to think of a word that rhymes with crunch.
- Suggest words that rhyme with crunch (e.g., “How about lunch? Does lunch rhyme with crunch?" Nod yes).
Recognize rhyming words
- Ask the children to show thumbs up if two words rhyme (e.g., crunch, lunch) and thumbs down if the words do not rhyme.
- Repeat with other sets of words (e.g., crunch, hunch; hunch, bunch; munch, food; lunch, table).
