Race to a Face

Objective
Recognize words that rhyme with face (e.g., "Do race and space rhyme?") and produce rhyme words (e.g., "Think of a word that rhymes with race.").
Lesson Plan
Target Words:
- race
- space
- face
- suitcase
- lace
- vase
Materials:
- Masking tape or sidewalk chalk
- Picture cards
State and Model the Objective
The children will get to race to a face as they recognize and produce words that rhyme with race, such as face, case, space, chase, and lace.
Literacy Activities
The Ace Race
- Make four to six copies of the picture cards, cutting two to four sheets into individual cards, and saving two sheets whole.
- Make two starting lines and two finish lines in an open space, and tape an uncut copy of the picture cards at each finish line.
- Take the children to the racing area and invite them to listen for words that rhyme with face as they race.
- Divide the children into two teams and have the teams line up single file behind the starting lines.
- Help the children identify each of the picture cards, and point out that they all rhyme with face.
- Hold up one of the picture cards, have the children identify it, and have the first child on each team race to touch the matching picture.
- Encourage the other children to cheer on their teammates by chanting, "Race to the ____ (e.g., vase)."
- After each pair of children return to the start, show the next two children in line a different picture card to race to and touch, and modify the cheer.
- Continue until all children have had a turn to race to and touch a picture that rhymes with face.
All kinds of ways to race
- Have the children act out different ways to race:
- Space Race—pretend to be floating through space
- Funny Face Race—make a funny face while you race
- Lace Race—walk like a fancy lady or gentleman
- Shoelace Race—walk quickly while holding or touching your shoelaces
- Suitcase Race—act like you are carrying or rolling a suitcase
- Encourage the children to chant the type of race to cheer on their teammates (e.g., "Space Race! Space Race!").
- Point out that each of the races had a word or two that rhymes with race (i.e., space, face, lace, shoelace, suitcase).
More Practice
Produce words that rhyme with race
- Remind the children of the words they played with (e.g., race, space, face).
- Ask each child to think of a word that rhymes with race (e.g., lace, vase, chase), supporting as needed.
March and say the sounds in words
- Tell the children that they will practice saying words that rhyme with race in fun ways.
- Have the children march and say the beginning and ending sound of the word race:
- segment sounds: say /r/ (march right), say /ace/ (march left)
- blend sounds: jump with both feet and say race to blend the sounds into a word
- Repeat with other words that rhyme with race (e.g., face, lace, pace, vase).
